Across the Russian River – Jenner California Landscape Canvas Print Across the Russian River was painted on location in Jenner, California, from the riverbank beside Cafe Aquatica, a wonderfully bohemian roadside café near where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. I was there painting with my friend and fellow artist Michelle Carnes during a special afternoon featuring a variety of local musicians, including our friend and singer Stephanie Salva. The music had drawn a crowd and the café was packed, but we managed to find just enough room along the riverbank beside the stage to set up our easels and paint while the musicians played. It was such a treat to spend the afternoon painting outdoors with live music all around us, surrounded by friends, artists, and the beautiful landscape of Jenner. From where I stood, structures along the waterfront blocked my view toward the mouth of the river and in the opposite direction, so I painted what was directly in front of me: the quiet bank across the Russian River. Golden grasses and layered greens covered the hillside, darker trees gathered along the ridge, and the blue-green river stretched across the foreground. What might have seemed like an ordinary view became a study in the subtle colors and quiet beauty of Northern California. I love the contrast in my memory of this painting. Behind me was a lively café filled with people, music, friends, and creativity, while across the water everything appeared peaceful and still.
