Buddha’s Hand | Visionary Meditation Art Buddha’s Hand was inspired by a vivid vision I experienced during a period of deep meditation while living among the redwood-covered hills of Cazadero, California, near a Tibetan Buddhist monastery. During meditation, I experienced luminous visions of Buddhist monks and figures appearing within glowing, fractal-like orbs. In one especially powerful encounter, a radiant figure extended a shining hand toward me. I experienced the gesture as an acknowledgment and encouragement: Yes. Keep doing what you are doing. It is powerful. The image remained so vivid in my memory that I eventually felt compelled to paint it. Rendered in intense reds, golds and luminous light, Buddha’s Hand is not intended as a depiction of Buddhist doctrine, but as a personal visual record of a profound meditative experience and the sense of connection, mystery and wonder it left behind. This hand position is a Abhaya Mudra, one of the most significant and recognizable ritual hand gestures (mudras) in Buddhism. The gesture is formed by holding an open right hand upright, flat, and facing outward at chest or shoulder level, with the fingers pointing upward and pressed close together. Symbolic meanings are Fearlessness and Protection: The Sanskrit word Abhaya translates literally to "fearlessness". This gesture signifies profound spiritual protection, reassurance, and the dispelling of fear. Peace and Benevolence: The outward-facing open palm is a universal symbol of peace, signaling an offering of safety and benevolence to all living beings. Divine Radiance: In this specific piece, the hand is encircled by a vibrant golden halo/aura against a deep red backdrop. This visual element emphasizes the divine, protective warmth and spiritual illumination radiating outward from the Buddha. Historical origins, according to Buddhist lore, this mudra is famously tied to an event where the Buddha used it to tame a rampaging, intoxicated elephant named Nalagiri, which had been set loose by a jealous cousin to attack him. As the elephant charged, the Buddha calmly raised his right hand in this position, immediately soothing the animal and neutralizing the danger through pure peaceful energy.
