Salmon Creek Beach – Bodega Bay California Landscape Canvas Print Salmon Creek Beach was painted on location at the mouth of Salmon Creek, just north of Bodega Bay along California’s beautiful Sonoma Coast. My friend and fellow artist Michelle Carnes had recently gotten her studio in Bodega Bay, and we met there for an afternoon painting session. We arrived and immediately began setting up our easels, ready to paint. I had come intending to paint the Pacific Ocean, but the sun was unusually brilliant that day, hanging over the water and blazing across its surface with an almost blinding intensity. I quickly realized that staring toward that reflected sunlight for hours while I painted probably wasn’t the best idea. So I turned toward the rocks beside me, and suddenly, there was my painting. The intense sunlight carved deep shadows into the rugged, almost chiseled rock formations. Seagulls perched among them while the sandy beach sloped toward the shoreline and powerful waves rolled continuously onto the shore. I remember the rhythmic crash of the surf, the windy, salty ocean air, the sand beneath our feet, and standing at our easels surrounded by the wild beauty of the Sonoma Coast. What began as a plan to paint the open ocean became instead a painting of the dramatic rocks, surf, light, and shadow that caught my attention when I simply turned around.
