Spirit Path began many years before I moved to California, but in many ways it represents the beginning of the journey that eventually led me there. I painted the original around 1993 while attending art school in Columbus, Ohio. Our class traveled to a large nature reserve north of the city, where we were free to spread out and choose whatever landscape inspired us. I wandered far from the group, following a dusty path up a hill beneath the hot sun. It was a gorgeous day, and I began painting the simple landscape before me: the winding path, open fields, distant trees, and an immense sky filled with moving clouds. It was the sky that became unforgettable. As I painted, I saw what appeared to me to be an enormous eye forming within the clouds. The formation remained visible for a remarkably long time, even as the clouds continued moving across the sky. Standing alone at my easel, I found myself having a quiet, deeply personal conversation with that presence. I had been through some difficult experiences in my young life and had reached a point when I was questioning where my own path was leading. That afternoon became a turning point. I made a conscious decision to trust myself and follow what I came to think of as my Spirit Path. I didn't know where that path would take me or what kind of life waited ahead. What followed was a long and extraordinary journey shaped by love, art, family, remarkable experiences, encounters I understood as spiritual, and an ever-deepening fascination with nature, mystery, and the unseen. Through it all, art became the language I used to explore and express that world. I've learned over the years that I don't always understand a painting when I make it. Sometimes its meaning reveals itself months later, sometimes years or even decades later. I'll look at an old painting and suddenly think, Oh. Now I understand. Spirit Path has become one of those paintings for me. Looking back, the winding road disappearing over the hill feels almost prophetic. I painted it at a moment when I had consciously decided to trust myself and follow my Spirit Path. Shortly afterward, I met the man who would become my husband, and my life began unfolding in directions I never could have imagined that afternoon. I couldn't see where the road was going. I only knew I had chosen to follow it.
